When describing the railway in the Zielona Góra region, it must be remembered that in January 1871, the war between the Germans and the French ended. The victorious Germans imposed large contributions on the defeated. This money contributed to the economic recovery. Zielona Góra took advantage of this finance and invested in railway routes.

The Zielona Góra Główna railway station was opened on October 1, 1871. At that time, the station was called Grünberg (Schlesien). Since January 1947, the station has been called Zielona Góra Główna.
The station had two platforms; Platform 1 single-edged, Platform 2 double-edged. In 1965, Platform 3 and Platform 4 were built in the eastern part of the station, and Platform 1A with a frontal track, in the western part of the station. Around 1985, the current track layout was created, where Platform 4 was eliminated, and was 170 m long. Platform 1A was rebuilt in 2015 and is 220 m long. Currently (2022) the station has Platform 1, single-edge, 300 m long. Platform 1A, frontal, 220 m long. Platform 2, double-edge, 390 m long. Platform 3, single-edge, is 210 m long. In 1985, a road viaduct over the railway tracks along Sulechowska Street was put into use. In this way, the road railway crossing, which was more often closed than open, was eliminated.
In the period 2015-2018, the platforms and track system of the station were renovated. The platforms and the underpass under the platforms were renovated. New platform shelters were installed on the platforms. Three lifts were installed for disabled passengers, passengers with large luggage and for residents. The underpass was extended to Towarowa Street, on the northern side of the tracks. As part of the renovation, the railway viaduct and another rail-road crossing were renovated. Zielona Góra Główna Station is equipped with an extensive passenger information system, which consists of: audio devices, electronic displays in liquid crystal technology, clocks and timetable boards. The station has a security monitoring system. Zielona Góra Główna Station also has railway warehouses, which currently serve various functions, mainly commercial. There is an unused water tower. There are two railway signal boxes at the station. In terms of freight traffic, Zielona Góra Główna station is a temporary stopover point for freight trains, which run more intensively in the late afternoon and at night, when the number of passenger trains is reduced. Among the passing trains, there are many trains belonging to private carriers. Freight traffic is correlated with the nearby large Czerwieńsk freight station.

Zielona Góra Główna Station.
Zielona Góra Główna Station was opened in 1871. At that time, it was a small station building. In 1902, a new station was opened, built of red brick, with a brick facade. The building was built according to typical plans of Prussian stations; i.e. two main buildings connected by a lower building. The station had two storeys and was covered with slightly pitched roofs, covered with roofing felt, with characteristic eaves, which was also typical of Prussian buildings. On the ground floor were: the main hall, ticket and luggage offices, waiting rooms, a restaurant and a café. On the first floor were offices and apartments for the scout and restaurateur. The building had a partial basement. The station facade had ornaments made of brick and ceramics.
The square in front of the station was paved and intended for carriages and omnibuses. Omnibuses in Zielona Góra were relatively quickly fitted with rubber wheels. Zielona Góra never had horse trams, let alone electric ones. In the early 1960s, a new station was built because the old building was too small and did not meet the needs of the time. The station was built in a modernist style with a trapezoidal roof. The building had extensive glazing. Unfortunately, the technology at the time did not provide good thermal insulation and the building turned out to be expensive to heat. Therefore, a decision was made to carry out a general renovation. The renovation was carried out in three stages. The first stage was carried out in 2004-2006. The second stage was carried out in 2008-2009, and the last one was carried out in 2011-2012. The grand opening took place on 16 August 2012. The cost of the renovation was PLN 7 million. The renovation included new elevations with insulation, new windows and doors. The entrance doors are automatic. New cash registers, information point, retail areas (gastronomic point, grocery store), medical point, municipal guard point, new toilets, railway information, monitoring, drinks machines were made.
The station is located at Dworcowa Street 32c. You can get here by public bus.
