The ET41 electric locomotive is a standard gauge heavy two-unit electric freight locomotive. The locomotive was developed by Polish designers based on the EU07 electric locomotive. The locomotive was produced in the period 1977-1983, at the HCP plant in Poznań. 200 units were built. The locomotive is popularly called the “Jamnik”.

The locomotive was developed at the HCP factory in Poznań. The basis for the development of the locomotive was the EU07 electric locomotive, by combining two electric locomotives into a set. The project in Poznań was designated HCP 203E, and in PKP it was designated ET41 type.

The ET41 is designed to pull heavy freight trains. The ET41 locomotive can pull exceptionally heavy freight trains weighing up to 4,000 tons at a speed of 70 km/h. Both units were connected by a short screw coupling, electric cables, pneumatic cables and a multiple control system. A passage was also built between the units for the locomotive service. This passage was protected by rubber covers. The ET41 locomotives have one cabin at each end. In the ET41 locomotive, the bogie frames were reinforced compared to the EU07. The locomotive frame was adapted to mount Soviet couplers.

On the basis of the ET41, from 1983, EU07 locomotives were produced (in HCP), which differ in details from the previously built EU07 (in PaFaWag). As a result of several accidents, two ET41 locomotives were created from damaged units. In the 90s, in ZNTK, three single ET41 units were rebuilt into EU07 locomotives. In 2001, all remaining ET41 locomotives were taken over by PKP Cargo. These were 162 ET41 locomotives. In 2009, there were still 160 locomotives in use. In 2012, 38 ET41 locomotives were moved to the waiting reserve, to the stockyard. Some were to be scrapped, and the rest were to wait for better times.

Modernization of ET41 locomotives.

In 2016, the ET41-002 locomotive was selected for major repair and modernization (repair level P5/1+M). The locomotive was ready in December 2016. By the end of 2017, 6 locomotives had been renovated. By the end of 2019, 14 ET41 locomotives had been modernized. The repairs combined with modernization were performed at the Rolling Stock Repair Plant of PKP CARGOTABOR Company in Ostrów Wielkopolski.

The modernization of ET41 consisted of replacing the electrical part, traction motors, pneumatic systems. The driver’s cabs were rebuilt, its interior was soundproofed, and air conditioning was installed. The cab has new, more legible indicators and meters for monitoring electrical parameters. New, tight side windows with tinted glass and electrically heated front windows were installed. A fire protection system and cameras were installed to record the image of the trail in front of the vehicle.
